Angelė Šimoliūnienė
I am from Lithuania. Drawing has been my favourite activity since childhood.
When I was working as a teacher of Lithuanian language and literature, I enrolled in the Music Academy to study directing.
For 3 years I have been delving deeper into Third Millennium Psychology, based on Western and Eastern philosophy.
I studied Art History at the Art Academy.
Our children come to us through us, we bring them up and let them go into life to continue on their own path. In the same way, my creations are like my children. They came through me and I released them into the world. They are precious to me because they have opened up a wider view of the world and what is beyond it. Looking at my paintings, I realised what is communicated to me through them, that there is a world that is invisible to us, that we are never alone, that we are always being watched – our actions and especially our thoughts are under constant surveillance.
There are many forces of good and evil around. If our actions and thoughts are pure, evil does not come near us because we are surrounded by positive energies. If our thoughts are bad, we are enveloped by negative energy, which attracts more evil and overwhelms us. My paintings reveal this attitude. I paint when inspiration comes, when I feel the energy. Pictures are viewed from 3-5 meters. I have been painting in acrylics for ten years.
62 solo exhibitions of my paintings have already taken place in Lithuania.

Angele, your practice emerges from a state of intuitive surrender, painting without visual reference, guided solely by internal sensation. In an era where conceptual frameworks often dominate contemporary discourse, how do you position the subconscious as a legitimate source of artistic authority, and what does this say about the boundaries (or collapse thereof) between cognition and creation in your work?
A true creator must be guided by his subconscious, intuition, that's why he is a creator, and not repeat someone else's invented schemes. Every artist searches for himself in painting, tries to awaken intuition, and the bravest ones break the established rules.
You have described your paintings as spiritual portals, infused with personal energy and formed by unseen forces. How do you reconcile this deeply mystical process with the physicality of paint and canvas? Is the act of painting for you more akin to a ritual of transmission than a construction of meaning?
My creative process is intuitive, guided not by vision, but by feelings. Subconscious impulses guide my hand and show a deep connection with my inner world. The transmitted information remains in the painting. Motifs are often symbolic, multi-layered, surpassing literal interpretations, inviting exploration of the emotional and existential dimensions of human life.
Having journeyed through disciplines as varied as art therapy, directing, neuroeducation, and Eastern philosophy, your creative output is steeped in hybrid knowledge. Could you speak to how these intellectual and spiritual modalities converge in your visual vocabulary, and whether the canvas serves as a space of synthesis or resistance?
I never thought that I would have to study all my life and pass on that accumulated knowledge to people: literature, directing, medicine, genetics, psychology, Eastern philosophy, art therapy, neuroeducation, art history. For my directing work, I was awarded a medal from the Ministry of Culture, and for my educational activities and helping people, I was awarded the Order of St. Princess Olga. My paintings continue to do that educational work. They make you think, analyze, awaken intuition, and raise a person to a higher spiritual level.
There’s an esoteric geometry at play in many of your works, spirals, orbs, shadowed silhouettes, that seem to bypass narrative in favor of symbolic resonance. Do you view these as inherited visual archetypes, and if so, how conscious are you of channeling collective memory through private sensation?
Our subconscious mind contains not only our life experiences and impressions, but also the genetically transmitted experience of the entire family over 7 generations, successes, failures, talents, and abilities. But sometimes it reaches further, the collective memory of society from ancient times goes on. And all this is reflected in the work of painting.
In your worldview, every painting carries an energetic frequency that harmonizes with the viewer’s genetics. This positions art not merely as aesthetic object but as a form of vibrational medicine. How do you envision the viewer’s role in activating this frequency, and do you see your exhibitions as sites of energetic exchange rather than passive observation?
Each painting emits its own vibrations, which the artist put in at that time. If the artist has a strong energy field, then the paintings will vibrate strongly, and if the energy field is weak, then the paintings will be silent, empty, cold, although very beautiful. The viewer will be energetically drawn to that painting, which will positively resonate with the energy of that person. I look at my paintings as an energetic exchange.
The tension between light and dark, both chromatically and conceptually, features prominently in your compositions, echoing dualities of good and evil, visible and invisible. Is this dualism a formal device, or is it reflective of a deeper philosophical stance on the human condition and our place in a cosmos governed by opposing forces?
My paintings invite viewers into a metaphysical dialogue between light and consciousness, reflecting the essence of life energy, oscillating between bright hues and contemplative forms, reflecting the belief in the dual forces of good and evil that shape human existence. Reflecting a deeper philosophical position about the human condition and our place in the cosmos. In my paintings, I want to show that we are not alone on this Earth, that there are many energies, forces around us - good and bad, visible and invisible to the eye.
Given that you rarely revisit your finished works, believing the intuitive act to be final, how do you approach the notion of editing or critique, whether internal or external? Do you ever experience friction between the instinctive moment of creation and the art world’s expectations of reflection, explanation, or refinement?
This is information conveyed through paintings, so it is not subject to art criticism. The paintings are viewed from 3-5 meters.
With 62 solo exhibitions in just ten years, your output is remarkably prolific. What is your relationship to time, both the temporal experience of painting and the broader arc of your creative life? Do you view each work as a fleeting capture of present energy or part of a cumulative, evolving cosmology?
I have been drawing since childhood, but I had taken a break. 10 years ago I returned to painting again. Now I have painted 600 paintings, organized 62 personal exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions. My works are included in 20 art books and catalogs. And it seems to me that this is just the beginning, there is still a lot to be done. When I look at all my painted works, I understand that they respond to any person, at any time of life. They are not short-term, they are eternal values. They are part of a cumulative and developing cosmology.
Theatricality, rhythm, and choreography surface in your painterly gestures, unsurprising given your background in directing and stagecraft. Do you ever imagine your works as performative scores rather than static images? And if so, what kind of internal dramaturgy unfolds across the canvas as your brush moves in a state of heightened sensation?
My works are a symphony of bright colors and a dynamic brushstroke, combining physical and abstract elements into harmonious compositions and scenes. I also thought about the possibility that in the future my works could be presented as performative works, although the images in some of my paintings are still moving. If you look at them for a longer time, the image changes, the poses of the people change, they turn away, they turn away. It seems as if they are alive.
You’ve said that painting begins when your hands grow hot with energy, suggesting a somatic threshold between ordinary and creative states. Have you developed personal rituals or techniques to cultivate this readiness? And how does the body, often overlooked in discussions of visual art, function as both antenna and conduit in your creative process?
Yes, I go to paint when I feel energy in my body, especially in my hands. I don't have any rituals or techniques. My body just tells me to paint. The energy I receive has to flow into the painting.
