Alisa Chernova

Biography

Alisa Chernova is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the complex relationship between human psychology, emotion and the unconscious.
Born in Ukraine in 1963 and based in Marbella, Spain, she brings a psychologically informed perspective to contemporary painting, transforming inner experiences into visual narratives through expressive gesture, symbolism, texture and mixed media.

Her work explores themes of identity, memory, anxiety, despair, isolation, control and the contradictions of human nature. Rather than illustrating emotions directly, Chernova seeks to reveal what lies beneath the visible surface — the internal states that shape our perception of ourselves and the world around us.

Her works have been presented at international exhibitions and art fairs across Europe, Asia and the United States, and have received recognition through international art publications and curatorial reviews. Her artistic language moves between expressionism, symbolism and abstraction, creating works that invite the viewer into an emotional and introspective dialogue.
Chernova’s practice is ultimately concerned with one question: what happens when the invisible becomes visible?

Artist Statement

I am fascinated by what remains invisible — the emotions, memories and contradictions that shape us from within. My background in psychology and psychotherapy profoundly influences my artistic practice. I explore the human psyche through colour, texture, gesture and symbolism, transforming complex inner experiences into visual form. I do not paint emotions as they appear. I paint what lies beneath them.

Anxiety, despair, identity, memory, control and the masks we create are recurring themes in my work. Each painting becomes an exploration of the space between what we show the world and what we carry inside.
I see myself as an Architect of Emotions — giving form, structure and a visual language to experiences that are often impossible to express in words.

My intention is not to tell the viewer what to feel, but to create a moment of recognition — when something within the painting unexpectedly meets something within themselves.
For me, art begins where words end.
