Ashley Gray

Biography

Ashley Gray, working under the artist name Human, is a UK artist based in London. His practice has developed from more than a decade of experience in digital and 3D art, informed by a background in computer games art and a Master's degree in Computer Games Art.

Working primarily through 3D modelling, digital painting and constructed imagery, Gray creates work that begins with an idea, feeling or emotional tension. His images explore the complexities of being human, often touching on identity, vulnerability, grief, mortality, ego and the pressure of expectation.

Rather than using digital technology simply as a means of technical display, Gray treats it as a visual language through which intangible experiences can be given form. His work often occupies a space between the recognisable and the surreal, using constructed worlds and symbolic imagery to explore ideas that are difficult to articulate directly.

Gray has exhibited internationally and has received recognition throughout his digital art career, including two CGSociety Editor's Choice awards, Creativepool Top 25 recognition and a Creativepool Annual 2023 People's Choice award in the 3D category for Black Hole Heart. His work has also been exhibited internationally, including with Rossocinabro in Rome, where his work Pins was presented as the lead image for the exhibition Punctum.

The name Human reflects the central position of Gray's practice: a broad, collective defence of imperfection and limitation. Beneath the roles, identities and expectations placed upon us, there remains simply the fact of being human: trying, failing, changing and doing what we can.

My work begins with an idea, a feeling, or a tension within an idea. I use digital 3D modelling and painting to give these intangible thoughts a physical form, creating images that sit somewhere between the familiar and the surreal.

Although my practice has grown from a background in computer games art and more than a decade working with digital imagery, I am less interested in the technology itself than in what it allows me to explore.

Artist Statement

My work is concerned with the human condition: identity, vulnerability, mortality, expectation, isolation and the contradictions that exist within us. There is often an underlying sense of existential pressure: the distance between what we need to be, what we think we should be, and what we are capable of becoming.

The name Human reflects this interest. It is both an observation and a kind of defence: a reminder that beneath our identities, ambitions and expectations, we are simply people trying to navigate existence.

I don't seek to provide definitive answers. Instead, I use images to give form to questions, feelings and ideas that I am still trying to understand.
