Biography

Hildegarde Handsaeme is a Belgian visual artist known for her distinctive interplay of fluid lines, geometric structure and colour. Working in acrylic paint and ink, she has developed an immediately recognisable visual language in which the human figure is reduced to its most essential and expressive form.

At the heart of Handsaeme’s work lies a continuous search for balance. Curved lines move through precisely constructed areas of colour, creating compositions that feel both serene and quietly powerful. Figuration and abstraction coexist: a face, a body or an intimate connection may be suggested with only a few deliberate gestures, leaving space for the viewer’s own emotions and interpretation.

Her approach is guided by clarity and restraint. Every line has a purpose; every colour and open space contributes to the rhythm of the composition. Rather than describing the figure in detail, Handsaeme captures its presence. Her subjects convey femininity, inner strength, vulnerability and self-possession without becoming conventional portraits. They exist as independent presences, defined as much by silence and space as by the lines that surround them.

This economy of form gives her paintings and works on paper a timeless quality. Although visually minimal, they carry an emotional depth that reveals itself gradually. Handsaeme lives and works in Belgium, where she continues to create from her studio.

Artist Statement

My work begins with the line. I use it to reduce the human figure to its most essential form, removing unnecessary detail while preserving emotion, character and presence.

Through fluid contours, geometric structures and carefully balanced areas of colour, I explore the relationship between figuration and abstraction. The female figure is central to my practice, not as a conventional portrait, but as an expression of inner strength, vulnerability, intimacy and self-possession. In some works, two figures meet or overlap, suggesting connection, tension or quiet dialogue.

Balance is fundamental to my visual language. Every line, colour and open space has a purpose and contributes to the rhythm of the composition. I am interested in what can be conveyed with restraint: a single curve can suggest a body, an emotion or an entire relationship.

Whether I work with black ink on paper or acrylic paint on canvas, I seek clarity without losing depth. My compositions appear calm and minimal, yet their meaning is never fixed. I leave space for viewers to bring their own memories and emotions to the work.

Ultimately, I aim to create images that feel timeless: works that reveal themselves slowly and communicate through line, silence and presence.
