Kari Veastad

Biography

Kari Veastad is a Norwegian artist based in Rogaland whose work explores the emotional connection between people, memory, and place. Working primarily in acrylic, she creates paintings that capture the atmosphere and essence of landscapes rather than their literal appearance. Through the use of color, texture, and light, she seeks to evoke moments of reflection and invite viewers into a personal dialogue with the natural world.

A self-taught artist, Veastad has developed her practice through years of independent study, experimentation, and observation. Her artistic journey has been shaped by a strong curiosity about how visual language can communicate feelings, memories, and experiences that often exist beyond words. Free from the constraints of formal artistic training, she has cultivated an approach that combines discipline with intuition, allowing each painting to emerge through a process of exploration and discovery.

The landscapes of Norway have always been an important source of inspiration in her work. The changing qualities of Nordic light, the dramatic coastline, open skies, and shifting seasons continue to influence her artistic vision. Rather than depicting specific locations, Veastad is interested in capturing the emotional response that a place can generate. Her paintings often begin with observations from nature but evolve through memory and imagination, resulting in works that occupy a space between representation and abstraction.

Travel has also played a significant role in shaping her artistic perspective. Encounters with different cultures, landscapes, and artistic traditions have broadened her understanding of place and deepened her appreciation for the universal human desire for connection and belonging.

Central to Veastad's work is a fascination with the transformative power of light. Whether inspired by the muted tones of a Norwegian winter, the glow of an evening sky, or the vibrant colors encountered during travel, she uses light as a vehicle for emotion and storytelling. Color serves not merely as a descriptive element but as a way of conveying mood and presence. Through carefully balanced contrasts and subtle tonal variations, she creates spaces that encourage contemplation and emotional engagement.

Texture is another essential component of her practice. Veastad works intuitively with layered surfaces, allowing marks, gestures, and traces of previous decisions to remain visible within the final composition. The surface of each painting becomes a record of the creative process itself, revealing moments of revision, uncertainty, and discovery. This layered approach mirrors the complexity of memory and perception, where experiences are not fixed but continually shaped by time and reflection.

Alongside her artistic practice, Veastad has built a professional career in Corporate. The combination of analytical thinking and creative exploration provides a unique foundation for her work. The structured and strategic aspects of her professional life inform her understanding of composition and balance, while painting offers a space for experimentation, intuition, and emotional expression. This interplay between order and spontaneity is evident throughout her practice and contributes to the distinctive character of her paintings.

For Veastad, painting is more than the creation of images; it is a way of understanding the world. She views the studio as a place of inquiry where observation, memory, and imagination intersect. Each work develops through an evolving dialogue between artist and canvas, often leading to unexpected outcomes. This openness to uncertainty allows her paintings to retain a sense of vitality and authenticity, encouraging viewers to find their own meaning within the work.

Themes of memory, atmosphere, and connection continue to guide her artistic journey. Her paintings reflect a belief that landscapes are not merely physical locations but emotional spaces shaped by personal experience. Through her work, she seeks to create moments of stillness and reflection in a world increasingly defined by speed and distraction. By encouraging viewers to pause and engage with the subtle qualities of color, texture, and light, she hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for the environments that influence our lives and identities.

Veastad's work ultimately speaks to the universal human experience of belonging: to a landscape, to a memory, or to a moment in time. Through expressive color, layered surfaces, and an intuitive approach to painting, she creates works that invite contemplation while leaving space for individual interpretation.

Her paintings serve as visual reminders that our relationship with place is both deeply personal and profoundly shared, connecting us to the world around us and to ourselves.
She has participated in both Solo and Group Exhibitions many countries such as, Rome and Florence in Italy, New York, South Korea, Dubai and Paris in France.
And also received several international awards and participated in different art books and publications.

Artist Statement

I love to play with colors. My colors and hands take me on a joyous and unfamiliar journey through inner and outer landscapes. I am constantly surprised by what comes on the canvas as different movements.
The painting often draws attention to the inner wealth of man. I intend to inspire you to open up and pay attention to your inner landscape for reflection and movement.
My inspiration is the beauty in the surroundings and my passion for the interaction between body, soul, and spirit.
