Biography

Michael Bourque is an artist living in Boston, MA. He is a graduate of American University and went on to study at Pratt Institute and the School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston. In his award-winning career, he has pursued interests in design, painting and photography. With a long career as a commercial interior designer, he has created millions of square feet of space that displays other people’s artworks. This unique vantage point taught him the relationship of art and space. He is widely published and the recipient of over 35 national and international awards.

His “mark making” paintings are his unique style. Mark making illustrates the power of each individual brushstroke. His powerful brushstrokes are enhanced by his use of color, which is layered. Flashes of color peek through the pattern to add to the visual interest. Colors are made brighter by juxtaposition to unexpected colors and strong shapes are made stronger with the heavy application of paint. The effect is to invigorate the entire work, and to create rich surface textures.

Artist Statement

My paintings emanate from the intersection of art and design, showcasing a unique blend of structure and spontaneity. By incorporating geometry, I create a harmonious foundation where abstraction, repetition, and improvisation thrive. My lines adhere to the principles of geometry adding a layer of precision and complexity to each work.

My handling of color is particularly striking. By layering colors and allowing flashes to peek through, I create visual tension and interest. The employment of juxtaposition, where unexpected color combinations enhance brightness, adds a dynamic edge to my paintings. The heavy application of paint to accentuate strong shapes further enriches the surface texture, invigorating the overall piece and imbuing it with energy.

My professional background as an award-winning painter, photographer, and commercial interior designer informs my creative process, allowing me to create pieces that are both aesthetically compelling and thoughtfully constructed.
