Tatyana Palchuk

Biography

Tatyana Palchuka-Rikane (artistic pseudonym - Tatyana Palchuk) was born in 1954 in Riga, the capital of Latvia. From 1967 to 1973, she studied at the Jan Rozentals Riga Art Secondary School. From 1975 to 1981, she studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts in the easel painting department under Professor Edgars Iltners. She received an excellent mark in her diploma defense. From 1984 to 1987, she continued her postgraduate studies in the workshop of Academician Eduards Kalniņš of the USSR Academy of Arts. Constantly working and improving, Tatyana perfectly mastered the Latvian academic school of painting, including the academic school of drawing, a subtle sense of color, delicate painting technique, and excellent composition skills. In 2003, she received a Master of Arts degree in fine arts and painting.

In her work, Tatyana Palchuk draws on a rich world artistic heritage, in particular the Italian Proto-Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance (15th–16th centuries), and French illuminated manuscripts (15th century). Tatyana Palchuk is a member of the Latvian Union of Artists. She has held approximately fifteen solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions. Her paintings are in public and many private collections throughout the world. To make it all more interesting to read, here are a few quotes about art in general and the art of painting that are close to me and that I understand. I share these views. "Art, and nothing but art, art is given to us, lest we die from truth." Friedrich Nietzsche. "Art consists not in what man knows, but in what man feels. Everything else is science." Bernard Berenson. "The art of painting is, in essence, the art of expressing the invisible by means of the visible." Eugène Fromentin. "Gilding (illumination), the brightness of color - this is not the result of "medieval naivety", but a means of creating another world." André Malraux.

And one more thing... Traveling around Europe, I often heard the question: "Latvia? Where is that?" So I'll give a short answer. Latvia is a small country on the Baltic Sea coast next to Estonia and Lithuania. In 1940, it was occupied by the Soviet Union, and in 1990, it regained its independence. Western European culture and traditions have always dominated in Latvia. Latvia is the birthplace of world-famous artists: Mark Rothko, Vijas Celmins, Gustavs Klucis. Latvia is also famous for its opera singers: Elīna Garanča, Marina Rebeka, Kristīne Opolais, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Maija Kovalevska and others. The Latvian animated film "Flow" (Straume / Flow, 2024) directed by Gints Zilbalodis won an Oscar in 2025. The country is small in territory, but truly rich in world-famous talent.

Artist Statement

Deep and complete knowledge of my profession are proven by long years during which I was learning and improving myself as a professional. My creative work is first of all characterized by many exhibitions, publications and positive feedback from students, colleagues and art critics.

The basis of everything still remains academic professionalism. Even it is not a leading value in the arts currently – good master of his handcraft should combine talent and professionalism. It is definitely an advantage and provides additional quality to the work results. My creative work is too long and varied to be described in one page. T.P
