Biography

From clay to story, Eden Bender sculpts lives into form. Raised among farms, workshops, and junkyards, she developed an early fascination with objects—their surfaces, imperfections, histories, and the traces of human experience they carry. What began as a curiosity about the discarded and overlooked gradually evolved into a distinctive artistic language, one rooted in observation, empathy, and a deep respect for the stories embedded within the material world.

Bender’s expressive sculptural figures explore the complexity of the human experience. Her work is informed by an enduring interest in resilience, vulnerability, dignity, and connection, themes that have been shaped in part by people she encountered through her charitable work. Rather than simply depicting the human form, Bender uses the figure as a vehicle for storytelling, creating works that invite viewers to consider the lives, experiences, and emotions that exist behind the surface.

Her approach to sculpture reflects a fascination with both the physical and emotional qualities of her materials. Clay becomes more than a medium; it becomes a way of translating memory, character, and lived experience into tangible form. Through gesture, expression, texture, and carefully considered imperfections, her figures convey a sense of individuality and presence. The resulting works are deeply personal, while remaining accessible and resonant to viewers from a wide range of backgrounds.

Eden earned her Fine Arts degree from York University, where she further developed her artistic practice and her interest in the human figure. Her work has since received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Lindsay Morris Memorial Award from Allied Artists of America and the People’s Choice Award in The Brain Project.

Her sculptures have been featured in a variety of publications, reflecting the breadth of interest in her work. These include Beautiful Home by Studio Pyramid, Objekt International, 500 Figures in Clay published by Lark Books, and The Black and White of Eden Bender in Fusion Magazine.

Bender’s work has also received international recognition through exhibitions and juried presentations. Her sculptures have been exhibited at the International Juried Biennale in London, England; the International Ceramic Exhibition in Warsaw, Poland; and the Master Class in St. Petersburg, Russia. These international exhibitions have provided opportunities for her work to be experienced within diverse artistic and cultural communities, further establishing her presence as a contemporary sculptor whose work bridges personal experience and universal themes.

At the heart of Eden Bender’s practice is a belief that objects can carry stories—and that the human figure can give those stories a voice. Her sculptures honour both the material from which they are made and the profound narratives that material can hold. Whether drawn from personal observation, encounters with others, or the accumulated histories suggested by the objects that have fascinated her since childhood, Bender’s work ultimately asks us to look more closely: at the figure, at the material, and at the lives represented within them.

Artist Statement

My involvement in community has always been an important source of inspiration and education, shaping the way I observe people, environments, and the world around me. My sculptural practice explores the relationships between the human experience, our environment, and the psychological forces that shape how we navigate an increasingly complex and overstimulated world.

My work is both conceptual and figurative, often using the human figure as a vehicle for exploring transformation, resilience, identity, and the tensions between inner and outer experience. Scale and unusual juxtapositions invite the viewer into a surreal world where the familiar can become unexpected, and where stillness and movement, light and darkness, fragility and strength coexist.

Material experimentation is central to my process. I work primarily with paper clay while incorporating non-traditional ceramic glazes, fibre, metal, cement, and found objects. I am drawn to industrial and synthetic materials and often manipulate them to suggest organic forms, surfaces, and textures. Layers are built, altered, and reworked, allowing the physical process of making to become part of the narrative. Texture plays an important role, creating surfaces that invite both visual exploration and a desire to touch.

Through transformation of materials and form, I seek to create work that reflects the complexities of contemporary life while leaving space for introspection. The contrast between constructed and organic, damaged and renewed, dark and light, speaks to a continual search for balance, connection, and a sense of self-fulfillment.
