Janusz Tworek

Biography

My name is Janusz Tworek. I live in Krakow, Poland, and Tenerife. I have been an architect for almost 40 years. Like everyone who works in this profession, I am suspended between artistic sensitivity and the engineering precision of thinking.

In addition to drawing and painting, I have experimented with ceramics and stained glass. I have also worked with photography for most of my life. The unique atmosphere of Tenerife and the openness of the local population promote self-development and personal growth.

I am a self-taught painter. The awareness that one of the most outstanding contemporary painters, Francis Bacon, was also self-taught gives me strength to work and develop artistically. I am constantly searching, which is why I try my hand at both realistic and abstract painting. In addition to painting, I still draw with pencil, charcoal, and pastels. Sometimes I also use other techniques. All of this allows me to create works that are completely different, both in terms of mood and expression. Much depends on the atmosphere of the moment I am in.

While living in Tenerife, I met an exceptional person with typical Canarian kindness and a cheerful spirit, the outstanding artist Javier Huerta. He is both a professional and self-taught artist. Dozens of works that I have created have been inspired by contact with this unique artistic personality.

I have exhibited my works in Europe, the USA, and Canada. They have been exhibited in both original and digital versions. I am most proud of the exhibition in Austria at the historic Villa Am Kaiserweg, where my works were presented alongside those of artists such as Claude Monet, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Auguste Rodin, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Picasso.

Artist Statement

I am an architect, and I am slowly starting to feel like a painter. I paint because, despite my 67 years, I still cannot understand the madness of reality.
My artistic credo is the famous saying of Pablo Picasso: "I paint objects as I think about them, not as I see them."

About me: MARINA MAGGIORE, Art Curator, M.A.D.S. Gallery, Milan

"Janusz Tworek proposes a distorted reality, presenting objects not as they appear, but as our minds perceive them: intersecting images recomposed into a whole image enclosed by colorful, expressive colors."

About me: JAVIER LUCEA ALONSO, Art Critic of the Spanish Association of Art Critics

"Janusz Tworek's painting is a manifesto of feelings and allegorical hints, a concise message and immense pain. A new language, a new subject that surprises with both reason and unexpected elements. The mystery and meaning of colors and forms, simply the whole world. One must prepare oneself to contemplate images in order to be able to unite with painting, with what is beyond it, in other words, with what is presented on canvases and drawings. Man has been reduced to a mask, a caricature, to a scheme of life, which is reflected in an elementary version full of colors and drawings. This results from the fact that, in paintings and drawings, Janusz Tworek presents the way in which his soul perceives the social environment and recent history, and all this using metaphors and symbols as irreplaceable and effective tools. A painter of our times, who clearly shows affinity with Picasso and Salvador Dali, with a new structure and surprising language of a person who interprets nature and man deeply and sufficiently."
