Biography

Joanna is a British contemporary ink artist based in Sheffield, whose work is rooted in close observation, imagination, and a deep response to the natural world. Raised in Derbyshire, she developed an early connection to drawing and painting through the quiet landscapes that surrounded her, an influence that continues to shape her practice today.

Working primarily in intricate pen and ink, with occasional touches of acrylic, she creates detailed compositions that move between realism and dreamlike interpretation. Her work explores the tension between structure and fluidity, control and spontaneity, using line as both a building tool and a visual language.

Inspired by nature, music, and the hidden rhythms of form, Joanna reimagines organic subjects into layered, atmospheric pieces that invite reflection and closer looking. Artist Statement

My work is rooted in close observation, imagination, and a fascination with the quiet complexity of the natural world. Working primarily in pen and ink, with occasional touches of acrylic, I use intricate linework to build compositions that move between realism and dreamlike interpretation. I am drawn to forms that hold both structure and fluidity, allowing detail, rhythm, and atmosphere to shape the image.

Nature, music, and the subtle tension between control and spontaneity all inform my practice. Through layered marks and transformed organic subjects, I aim to create work that invites reflection, rewards close looking, and reveals something both familiar and unexpected.

At its heart, my work is an exploration of movement, transformation, and the space between what is seen and what is felt.
