Artist Statement

Painting is, for me, a way of preserving the emotional presence of a person, a place or a moment. My work is rooted in observation and in the desire to transform images that capture my attention into paintings that retain their recognizable character while acquiring a new intensity through colour.

My inspiration comes from nature, landscapes, meaningful human relationships and people who have touched my life or earned my admiration. I am particularly drawn to subjects that carry a story or an emotional significance. My work has included landscapes, portraits of family members and admired figures, couples and human relationships, as well as scenes inspired by theatre and cinema. Among these influences are memorable theatrical images, such as Stella with the Red Gloves by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, where gesture, atmosphere and human emotion become central to the composition.

I work primarily within a figurative and representational approach. Rather than moving away from the identity of my subject through imaginary elements, I seek to preserve its essence while interpreting its emotional character through my own visual language. I am interested not simply in reproducing what I see, but in emphasizing what makes an image remain in memory: a gesture, an expression, a relationship between figures, the atmosphere of a landscape or the emotional energy of a particular moment.

Colour and symmetry are fundamental elements of my artistic identity. I am naturally drawn to strong, luminous and vibrant colours, often building compositions around primary colours and powerful contrasts. For me, colour is not merely decorative; it carries emotion, creates intensity and can transform the way a familiar image is experienced. Symmetry and structure bring balance to this intensity, creating a dialogue between order and emotion that repeatedly emerges throughout my work.

Acrylic on canvas is my principal medium, although I also work with oils, gouache, charcoal, chalk, pastels and pencil on canvas and paper. The choice of material depends on the subject and on the quality I want to bring forward, whether that is softness, strength, immediacy, detail or expressive contrast.

Ultimately, I want my paintings to create a connection between the image and the viewer. Behind every subject I choose, there is something that first made me stop and look—an emotion, a story, a beauty, a memory or a human presence. Through colour, symmetry and representation, I seek to preserve that moment and offer it to the viewer from a new perspective, inviting them to discover their own emotion and narrative within it.
