Mia Segaert

Biography

Born in 1974, Mia Segaert has been pursuing her art career for 3 years, following a transition from a 25-year career in Real estate and Finance. Although passionate about photography since childhood, her artistic journey took a more structured path when she studied art photography at the Academy for Visual Arts in Brasschaat (Belgium). Over time, she has built a strong artistic identity, exhibited her work internationally.

Her photographic work explores three themes: Altitude. Earth. Ocean, drawing inspiration from both organic forms and architectural aesthetics. Her artistic research focuses on how natural landscapes can be reinterpreted through light, composition and abstraction. She studies how natural elements change over time. This research helps to frame her images in a way that goes beyond mere documentation, transforming them into conceptual and surreal visual narratives.

Each of her works carries a sense of serenity, mystery, and timelessness, inviting the viewer to engage with nature beyond what is immediately visible.

She won already many awards in international competitions. Yet the most striking ones are the State of the World 2023 Curatorial selection with Glacier Azur from Px3 Paris Photo Prize, Gold winner 2024 with Ethereal Bodies and Gold winner 2025 with White Powder from Muse Photography Awards. At XV Florence Biennale 2025 she won the “Lorenzo iL Magnifico Award” First Prize Photography.

A quote that resonates with her photography is this one by Henri Cartier-Bresson “It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera ... they are made with the eye, heart and head.”

Artist Statement

My artistic work is deeply rooted in nature, exploring the themes of Altitude, Earth, and Ocean. I draw inspiration from both natural patterns and architectural forms, creating (sur)realistic images that often resemble sculptures. Through my photography, I emphasize the intricate connection between organic structures and human-made designs, inviting viewers to see nature as both an architect and a storyteller.

Light plays a leading role in my landscapes, shaping new forms and revealing unseen details. My images evoke a sense of cartography — each one is captured in a specific place on Earth, yet remains untethered to any particular location, allowing for a universal experience of wonder and discovery.

Altitude – Observing glaciers, snowy landscapes, and ice formations, I capture the purity and vastness of high-altitude environments.Earth – Exploring caves, canyons, sand formations, and trees, I reveal the timeless beauty and geological artistry of our planet. Ocean – Capturing the movement of water in seascapes, rivers, and waterfalls, I explore the dynamic and ever-changing forces of water

Beyond documenting nature’s physical structure, I delve into the interaction of light and shadow, where new shapes and contours emerge—transforming landscapes into sculptural, mysterious, and thought-provoking compositions. My overarching message is a call to appreciate and care for our planet. By visually interpreting nature’s forms, I seek to inspire a deep sense of awe and responsibility for our beautiful blue world.
