Marie-Ghislaine Beaucé
Biography
My name is Marie-Ghislaine Beaucé, born in France in 1951. I have been fascinated by textile fibers since childhood, and in my teens, my ambition was to become a fashion designer. At the National School of Fine Arts in Nantes (Ouest of France), I experimented with weaving various materials such as hemp, old 8mm film, ribbons cut from fabrics, and painted cardboard tubes. At that time, I had the opportunity to visit and exhibition of the renown Catalan textile artist Grau-Garriga's work in Nantes, which was a revelation and strengthened my perseverance in this media.
I have worked for many years as a seamstress, designing and creating soft furnishing items in apartments, houses and yachts for various private clients in France, Spain and the United Kingdom where I currently live. I also designed and realized numerous stage costumes for La Sylvaine Ballet School shows in London, produced in important venues, such as the Britten Theatre and the Bloomsbury Theatre.
Since 2015, I have been more active as a textile artist, using left overs of soft furnishing fabrics - collected over the years - which, otherwise, would be destined to landfill. I participated in a large number of exhibitions all over the world; my work has received many international awards for innovation and individuality.
Artist Statement
Marie-Ghislaine Beaucé is a French artist whose journey is deeply rooted in her fascination with textile materials and their artistic potential. Her exploration of different textures, colours association, and forms has led her to develop a distinct visual language that merges the tactile quality of textiles with the conceptual rigour of geometric abstraction. The absolute protagonists of her artworks are the materials themselves that she intertwine and overlaps to create intricate, semi-abstract geometric lattice. These compositions are punctuated and delimited by rhythmic layers of fabrics, employing woven techniques of textile ribbons and superposition of padded tubes of fabrics, suggesting a sense of movement and progression; the artworks are characterized by their exploration of themes related to structure, fluidity and interconnectedness.
One of the central theme in Marie-Ghislaine Beaucé's work is the relationship between order and chaos. Her compositions often feature a structured, geometric framework that is softened by the organic, fluid nature of the textile fibers. Her work delves into the intersection of traditional textile techniques of weaving, kitting, and contemporary art, resuting in hybrid creations that straddle the line between patchwork and plasticism.
