Michael Goulding
Biography
Michael Goulding’s journey in the visual arts has spanned nearly his entire life, exploring various media, including pencil and charcoal drawing, painting in oil, tempera and acrylic, and sculpture, all with the purpose of capturing something evocative and beautiful. Ultimately, this journey led him to focus on the female form through black and white photography, a medium he has concentrated on for more than twenty years. His studio, located in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, serves as the center for his creative endeavors.
Goulding has developed a photographic practice distinguished by atmosphere, emotional subtlety and remarkable consistency. His signature nude photographs reveal a refined balance between intimacy, mystery, and formal elegance. Soft light, restrained composition, and a dreamlike sense of stillness give the images a timeless and quietly seductive presence. Goulding approaches photography with patience, precision, and deep sensitivity to mood, creating works that feel both contemplative and emotionally immersive. His photographs resist spectacle in favor of nuance, inviting viewers into poetic spaces shaped by shadow, gesture, and emotional resonance. The strength and consistency of his practice position him as a photographer of serious artistic depth and lasting collector appeal.
His work has been showcased in exhibitions across North and South America, Europe, and Asia, including the prestigious Dennis & Phillip Ratner Museum in Bethesda, Maryland. His photography has garnered multiple awards and has been featured in numerous publications dedicated to fine art photography. Additionally, his work has been licensed for use by musical artists for album covers and promotional materials. Goulding has served as President of Foundry Gallery, one of Washington D.C.’s oldest artist cooperative galleries. He is certified by the Museum of the Americas, United States and is an Affiliate Artist of the Circle Foundation for the Arts in France. He is currently represented by the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York, New York.
Artist Statement
My work focuses on capturing the beauty of the female form and spirit. I strive for my work to be both captivating and uplifting.
I believe black and white photography offers a unique perspective for viewers, highlighting elements of beauty that color photography might overlook. The high contrast forces viewers to focus on the interplay of light and shadow and textural details, which I use to capture the subtleties of the female form. I find black and white photography both elegant and soothing, adding to the allure of the compositions.
I derive great satisfaction in working with individuals who wish to explore their artistic side and be part of something lasting and beautiful. Each model brings unique attributes, leading to compositions that might not have otherwise been created. I also enjoy the continuity of working with the same model over time, discovering a “diversity within” that continually offers new creative possibilities.
I strive for my work to captivate and inspire, inviting viewers to appreciate the profound beauty found in the female form and the elegance of black and white photography.
