Biography

Stella Papa is a Cypriot contemporary visual artist based in Larnaca, Cyprus, whose artistic practice focuses on the human face, the male gaze, emotion, and the complex inner world of human experience. Through her distinctive visual language, she explores how emotions, thoughts, memories, and personal stories can be expressed through facial forms and fragmented compositions.

Her work is strongly influenced by Cubism, which she reinterprets through asymmetry, vibrant colours, expressive lines, geometric shapes, and the combination of different materials and techniques. Rather than pursuing realistic representation, Papa deliberately fragments and transforms the human face, creating compositions in which colour, form, line, and structure become emotional elements. Her paintings can be understood as visual interpretations of emotions, where each face becomes a reflection of an inner psychological landscape.

A defining characteristic of her practice is her preference for male portraits. Through the male face and gaze, she investigates vulnerability, strength, conflict, solitude, hope, identity, and the many emotions that coexist within the human heart. Her use of bold colours contrasts with the often monochromatic rhythm of everyday life, transforming it into compositions filled with energy, movement, optimism, and emotional intensity.

Since 2022, Stella Papa has participated in numerous exhibitions and international art events across Europe and beyond, presenting her work in galleries, art fairs, biennales, museums, digital exhibitions, and international cultural events. Her artistic presence has extended to major art destinations including Paris, Milan, Venice, Cannes, Monaco, Barcelona, Madrid, Florence, Rome, Zurich, Basel, London, Budapest, Vienna, Athens, New York, Miami, Chicago and other international locations.

Her works have been selected for prestigious international biennales and art events, including the Biennale di Milano, International Fine Art Cannes Biennale, International Contemporary Art Biennale Basel, International Biennale of Contemporary Art Venice, International Bienal de Arte Barcelona, and Women in Art London Biennale. She has also participated in international art fairs and exhibitions including Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, International Contemporary Art Fair Monaco, Art MUC, Art Innsbruck, INC Art Fair Germany, Art International Zurich, Red Dot Miami during Miami Art Week, Art Shopping Paris, Art Marbella, and other international art platforms.

Papa's work has also gained international visibility through large-scale digital and public art presentations. Her paintings have appeared on prominent screens and public displays in locations including Times Square in New York, London's Canada Underground Station, Waterloo Road in London, the Gràcia Metro in Barcelona, Wan Chai in Hong Kong, Zurich and Basel. Her work has additionally been presented through a Black Cab Showcase in London and through an international onboard exhibition project across seven European capitals: Paris, Barcelona, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Vienna.

Her artistic achievements include international prizes and distinctions presented in connection with exhibitions and competitions in Milan, New York, Nice, Venice, Monaco, Munich, Florence, Budapest, Madrid, Cannes, Barcelona, Padua, Paris and other major cultural centres. Among these are the International Prize Leonardo da Vinci – The Universal Artist, International Prize The New Great Masters in New York, International Prize Artists on the French Riviera, International Prize Poseidon – The King of Laguna for the Arts at Venice, International Prize Artist in the Art History, International Prize Caravaggio – Great Master of Art, International Prize Renoir – The Great Interpreter of Art, Premier Artist Prize, Giotto Prize, Paris Art Prize and International Masterpieces Award.

She has also received numerous honours and finalist distinctions in international art competitions, including awards from Dream Art Team Greece, MegaArt Gallery, Gallery 4%, Camelback Gallery, Art Room Gallery, TERAVARNA and other international art platforms. In 2025, she was recognised as Artist of the Year by Artavita, while her broader international recognition has continued through awards, selections and invitations to international exhibitions.

Her work has been presented in museum and institutional contexts, including the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, the Musée National du Sport in Nice, the MAS Museum in Milan, and exhibitions connected with international cultural and artistic organisations.

Stella Papa continues to develop a personal and recognisable artistic identity centred on the emotional power of the human face. By combining Cubist principles with contemporary experimentation, expressive colour and mixed techniques, she transforms portraits into emotional landscapes—where every line, shape and colour carries a feeling and every face tells a story.

Artist Statement

My paintings explore how the male gaze and the human face can embody the full spectrum of human emotions, thoughts, and inner reflections. Through facial expression and form, I seek to reveal the complexity and depth of the human experience.

I enjoy experimenting with and combining a wide variety of materials and techniques, allowing each artwork to develop its own unique visual language. Asymmetry, vibrant colours, expressive lines, and geometric shapes are the defining elements of my work, symbolising the countless emotions that the human heart can hold.

Cubism has always been a profound source of inspiration for me. It often reflects the routine and monochrome rhythm of everyday life, which I deliberately transform through bold, vivid colours—bringing energy, hope, and emotion into each composition.
