Majo Portilla Contemporary Artist | The Netherlands

Majo Portilla is a Latin American contemporary artist based in the Netherlands whose work explores identity, human connection, resilience and the complex ways in which heritage shapes our sense of belonging.

Working across abstraction, figurative painting and a distinctive single-line visual language, Portilla uses colour, gesture and the human figure to communicate beyond words. Her work is deeply personal yet deliberately open: faces are often absent or reduced to essential lines, allowing viewers to enter the narrative and recognize something of themselves within it.

Her artistic identity is strongly informed by her Latin American roots and her deep connection to Guatemala, where she was raised and where many of the colours, traditions and cultural references that continue to influence her work took root. Today, The Netherlands is home, adding another layer to a practice shaped by movement, memory and the experience of belonging to more than one place.

For Portilla, heritage is not defined solely by birthplace. It is what we inherit, what shapes us, what we choose to carry and, ultimately, what we leave behind.

This philosophy has accompanied an international career spanning exhibitions, museums, art fairs, public art and cultural initiatives across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. Her work has been presented at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, RAK Fine Arts Festival, Art Connects Women in Dubai, COP28 Dubai, and through international projects connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, alongside exhibitions and projects in Italy, Spain, Mauritius, Portugal, China, Singapore, Japan, UAE, USA, Argentina, France, UK, Switzerland, India and The Netherlands.

Her 3rd solo exhibition ETHNIC was a particularly personal expression of this dialogue between heritage and contemporary identity. Through eighteen works honoring Guatemalan women, Portilla translated cultural memory, femininity and tradition into a contemporary visual language, presenting the collection to an international audience in Dubai.

Over time, her practice has expanded beyond the canvas into public art and socially engaged projects, reinforcing her belief that art can create connections between people who may share neither language nor background. Her work and artistic journey have also been featured in international publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Tatler and The World of Interiors.

Portilla has received numerous international art recognitions, while her works have entered private collections internationally. Yet she considers the most meaningful measure of an artwork to be something far less tangible: the moment a person stops, feels and connects before needing to understand why.

From her studio and gallery in The Netherlands, she continues to create and exhibit internationally, developing a body of work where personal memory meets collective experience.

For Portilla, artistic heritage is not something preserved only in the past. It is something we make alive in the present transforming what we have inherited into something meaningful enough to be carried forward.

Artist Statement

I create because there are things I can feel more clearly than I can explain.

My work begins with human emotion: identity, connection, resilience, vulnerability and the search for belonging. I am interested in those experiences that are deeply personal yet somehow universal…the moments in which, despite our different cultures, histories and lives, we recognize something of ourselves in another person.

My visual language moves between abstraction, figurative work and single-line drawing. I often simplify or remove faces, not to erase identity, but to open it. A figure without a defined face can become anyone. It can become the viewer, a memory, someone loved, or someone never met.

Colour is my language; line is my instinct.

My Latin American roots and my deep connection to Guatemala are an important part of that language. They live in my relationship with colour, femininity, strength, memory and tradition. At the same time, the Netherlands is home, and living between cultural references has shaped the way I understand identity: not as something fixed by geography, but as something we continuously carry, question and transform.

This is also how I understand heritage.

To me, heritage is not about reproducing the past. It is about allowing what came before us to continue living through what we create today.

Whether I am working on canvas, a sculpture or a work intended for public space, I am ultimately searching for connection. I want the viewer to stop… even briefly… and feel something before needing to explain it.

I do not believe art needs to speak to everyone.

But when one person stands before a work and recognizes an emotion, a memory or a fragment of themselves within it, the distance between artist and viewer disappears.

That moment of recognition is why I create.

And perhaps that is what I hope to leave behind: not simply objects, images or paintings, but pieces of human experience that can continue speaking long after I have finished making them.
