Biography

María Isabel de Lince is a Colombian painter and psychologist whose artistic practice has developed through more than six decades of sustained engagement with color, light, nature, spirituality, and the emotional dimensions of visual experience. Born in Bogotá, where she continues to live and work, she is recognized for luminous abstract oil paintings that transform observations of the natural world into evocative fields of color, transparency, movement, and atmosphere.

Her relationship with art began in childhood, encouraged by a family environment in which painting, reading, nature, and faith were closely connected. She later studied Art and Architectural Design at Javeriana University and subsequently studied Psychology at the same institution. Her artistic education was further developed through studies with distinguished artists and masters David Manzur, Fernando Dávila, and Miguel Moyano.

Alongside her artistic career, de Lince practiced professionally as a psychologist. This experience contributed to her understanding of art as a powerful means of emotional and spiritual communication. Rather than illustrating psychological ideas directly, her paintings seek to create spaces of contemplation in which viewers may encounter feelings of peace, freedom, hope, joy, and connection.

Nature remains the central source of her visual language. Colombia’s oceans, forests, mountains, flowers, rivers, and extraordinary biodiversity have provided an enduring foundation for her work, alongside skies, galaxies, atmospheric phenomena, and the elemental forces of earth, air, water, fire, and ether. Originally working more figuratively, she gradually moved toward abstraction, allowing natural forms to become increasingly fluid and expressive.

Working primarily in oil on linen, de Lince builds her compositions through transparent glazes and successive layers of pigment. Light appears to emerge from within the paintings, while blues, greens, violets, reds, ochres, and luminous tonal passages create changing sensations of depth, movement, and space. Her work brings together technical knowledge, intuition, spiritual reflection, and a deep concern for environmental responsibility.

Over the course of her career, her paintings have reached audiences across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Selected international presentations include exhibitions and art events in China, Qatar, Dubai, New York, Paris, Vienna, Venice, Barcelona, and Rome. In Colombia, significant venues have included the Edgar Negret Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Bucaramanga, Museo Casa Grau, and the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.

De Lince has also received numerous international distinctions and has been featured in books, catalogues, and art publications. Despite this recognition, she considers painting itself the essential focus of her career. Through abstraction, she continues to explore nature, human emotion, faith, and the possibility of finding beauty, light, and hope within an uncertain world.

Artist Statement

My work is based on the observation of nature, from its simples elements such as a flower or a stream, to the most complex such as the sea, the sky, or a galaxy; and the phenomena that take place in it, from which, through a process of abstraction, I carry out my painting.

Color and light play a fundamental role in the development of my work due to their ability to produce sensations in the viewer; Combining visual elements derived from my perception of the natural, I seek to transmit through my paintings a message of peace and harmony, and awaken in those who observe them pleasant and heartwarming feelings that bring light and joy to their lives, and thus contribute to a peaceful, fraternal coexistence, and in harmony with the planet, raising awareness about the importance of caring for it and living in it as brothers.
