Mona Niko
Biography
Mona Niko is a contemporary visual artist, gallery owner, and creative entrepreneur based in Orange County, California. Her artistic practice is rooted in the belief that art should extend beyond the canvas and become part of everyday life, identity, fashion, and human connection.
Working primarily with acrylics and mixed media, Mona is known for expressive compositions, rich textures, bold color relationships, and an intuitive approach to layering. Color is central to her artistic language. Rather than treating color simply as a visual element, she uses it to communicate emotion, energy, memory, femininity, strength, and cultural influence. Her work often moves between figurative and abstract expression, allowing recognizable forms and spontaneous marks to exist together.
Mona's Persian heritage has also influenced her sensitivity to color, ornament, beauty, and storytelling. These influences appear in a contemporary rather than traditional form, creating a visual language that reflects both her cultural background and her life as an artist in California.
In 2018, she established Mona Niko Gallery in Orange County, creating a space that represents a broader vision of what an artist's world can become. Beyond exhibiting original paintings, the gallery brings together art, education, fashion, design, events, and creative experiences. Mona has expanded imagery from her artwork into wearable art, accessories, and interior pieces, reinforcing her philosophy that art does not have to remain on a wall it can be worn, experienced, shared, and lived with.
Teaching is another important part of Mona's practice. Through painting classes and workshops, she works directly with students of different ages and experience levels. Her approach encourages individuals to develop their own artistic voice rather than simply reproduce an image. This direct connection with students has also given her a deep understanding of how artists experience materials, especially acrylic paint, from color selection and mixing to texture, consistency, layering, and experimentation.
Mona continues to explore ways of bringing fine art into new creative categories through collaborations, product concepts, fashion, and design. Her goal is to create work and experiences that are distinctive, emotionally engaging, and accessible while maintaining a strong artistic identity.
For Mona, painting is not only about creating an image. It is a process of transforming emotion and imagination into color, texture, and experience and finding new ways for that artistic language to become part of people's lives.
Artist Statement
My work is driven by emotion, color, texture, and the desire to transform personal experience into a visual language that feels both intimate and universal.
I work primarily with acrylics and mixed media, building my paintings through layers, movement, contrast, and spontaneous gestures. Color is one of the most important elements in my practice. I use it not only to create beauty, but to express energy, memory, strength, vulnerability, femininity, and transformation.
My process is intuitive. I often begin with an emotion, a color relationship, or a visual feeling rather than a fixed image. As the painting develops, I allow the materials to guide the direction of the work. Layers are added, removed, softened, and rebuilt until the piece reaches a balance between control and freedom.
My Persian heritage also influences my relationship with color, ornament, symbolism, and storytelling. These influences appear in a contemporary and personal way rather than through direct traditional references.
I am interested in creating art that moves beyond the canvas. I believe art can exist in fashion, interiors, objects, education, and everyday life. This belief has led me to explore wearable art, design collaborations, and other ways of translating my visual language into new forms.
Ultimately, my work is about connection. I want viewers to feel something before they try to understand it. I want color, texture, and movement to create an emotional response and to invite people into a space that feels expressive, personal, and alive.
